Abstract:	Abstract: The study explores the processes of a semantic shift, in which one lexical unit moves into another semantic group. Cognitive mechanisms, including metaphor, metonymy, and generalization, were examined. The linguistic consequences of this phenomenon for modern English were analyzed.
